Senior Technician (FTC)

Purpose of the jobOxitec is a pioneer in controlling insects that spread disease and damage crops . Through world class science it is tackling the major global challenges of keeping people healthy and increasing food production and it is doing so in a way that is sustainable, environmentally friendly and cost effective. This position is required to ensure the progression of projects within Oxitec’s portfolio, by providing technical support to the research teams, including mentoring of technicians.ResponsibilitiesThe responsibilities of the role are to include:Molecular· Providing support to Senior Scientists in the lab during large-scale screening campaigns· Preparation of DNA, RNA and protein samples· PCR/qPCR analysis of nucleic acid samples· Western blot analysis of protein samples· Molecular cloningGeneral· Preparation and maintenance of laboratory stock solutions, supplies and equipment· Stock-taking and ordering laboratory supplies· Cleaning and organising work areas· Data entry and preliminary analysis· Excellent lab book maintenance· Training staff as required in line with training records· Assisting with laboratory maintenance (reporting and problem-solving facilities issues, accompanying site engineers etc)· Assisting with maintaining up to date health and safety records· Following SOPs· Running experiments according to specified protocols· Writing and updating SOPs and risk assessments· Follow Health & Safety and containment requirements for all activities· May or may not have line management responsibilities, which includes inducting staff, developing and nurturing staff, setting daily work agendas, ensuring that the team adheres to safety and containment requirementsKey Qualifications and Skills· Educated to BSc level or demonstrating exceptional technical abilities appropriate for the role· Must be diligent and organised, with data recording abilities· Have an attention to detail· Able to work independently and within a team· Good written English and oral communication skills and a diligent attitude· Competent in MS Word, Excel and OutlookKey Experience· A track record of working successfully both in a team and individually· Experience of working in a molecular biology or similar laboratory is essential, experience of handling insect samples is preferredBehaviour· Shows initiative· Adaptability and flexibility· Strong and willing communicator· Ability to work in a team and independently· Attention to detail· Be receptive to feedback
